Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of French bread cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • Powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Step 2: Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Step 3: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
  4. Step 4: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, making sure all the bread is soaked. Press down gently to help the bread absorb the liquid.
  5. Step 5: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter and brown sugar together. Drizzle this mixture over the top of the bread.
  6. Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  7. Step 7: Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.
  8. Step 8: Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup.

Notes

For a richer flavor, you can substitute half of the milk with additional heavy cream. You can also add fresh berries or a drizzle of caramel sauce for extra indulgence.
