Method
- Crush the chocolate sandwich cookies into fine crumbs to create the “dirt.” Set aside.
- In a bowl, whisk together the chocolate instant pudding mix and cold milk until thickened. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth, then mix in the powdered sugar.
- Fold the thawed whipped topping (Cool Whip) into the cream cheese mixture until light and fluffy.
- Gently fold the prepared chocolate pudding into the creamy whipped mixture until evenly combined.
- Assemble the casserole by spreading half the crushed cookie “dirt” in the bottom of a dish, then add the creamy filling, and finish with the remaining cookie crumbs on top.
- Refrigerate at least 4 hours (or overnight). Decorate with gummy worms and chocolate Easter eggs just before serving.
Notes
Make-ahead: This dessert tastes even better after chilling overnight. Refrigerate at least 4 hours (preferably overnight) before serving.
Storage: Cover tightly and store in the fridge up to 5 days. Keep away from strong-smelling foods (the creamy layer can absorb odors). Don’t leave out at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Decorating tip: Add gummy worms and candy toppings right before serving for the best look.
