These Simple Amish Onion Fritters are golden, crispy comfort food made with pantry staples and sweet onions, fried until perfectly tender inside and crunchy outside.

Ingredients

Scale

2 cups chopped white or sweet onions (about 2 medium onions)

¾ cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon cornmeal

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

⅔ cup whole milk (or half-and-half)

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or corn oil)

Instructions

1. Whisk flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until combined.

2. Add milk and stir gently to form a thick batter; small lumps are fine.

3. Fold in chopped onions until evenly distributed.

4. Let batter rest for 5 minutes while heating ½-inch oil in a skillet to 350–375°F.

5. Spoon tablespoon-sized portions into hot oil and flatten slightly.

6. Fry 2–3 minutes per side until deep golden brown.

7. Drain on paper towels and serve hot.

Notes

For extra richness, use half-and-half instead of milk.

Serve immediately for the crispiest texture.

These fritters pair well with sour cream or applesauce.
