Crispy Chilli Beef features tender strips of beef, fried until shatteringly crisp and tossed in a sticky, spicy, and sweet sauce for the ultimate Asian-inspired comfort food.
400g–600g sirloin or rump steak, thinly sliced
2 medium eggs, beaten
1 cup cornflour (cornstarch) or potato starch
Salt & black pepper
1 onion, thinly sliced
1–2 red chillies, sliced
2 tsp grated ginger
4 garlic cloves, minced
3 tbsp rice vinegar
4 tbsp light soy sauce
3 tbsp tomato paste or ketchup
5 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
2 tbsp sugar
Sesame seeds and spring onions, for garnish
Vegetable oil (for frying)
Optional: carrots, bell peppers, Chinese five-spice
1. Slice beef thinly against the grain. Season with salt and pepper. Mix with beaten eggs.
2. Coat beef in cornflour, separating strands for even coverage.
3. Heat oil in a wok. Fry beef in batches until golden and crispy. Drain on a rack.
4. Sauté onion until caramelized. Add ginger, garlic, and chillies; stir for 2 minutes.
5. Add vinegar, soy sauce, tomato paste, sweet chilli sauce, and sugar. Stir to combine.
6. Return beef to pan, tossing to coat in sauce. Serve hot.
7. Garnish with sesame seeds and spring onions. Enjoy immediately.
For gluten-free version, use gluten-free soy sauce. Add veggies like bell peppers or carrots for extra crunch and color.
