This Black Forest Trifle for Christmas layers rich chocolate cake, cherry filling, luscious cream, and a hint of Kirsch for a stunning holiday showstopper that’s as easy to make as it is delicious.
1 chocolate cake (enough for 9×13 pan)
2–3 cups cherry pie filling (or homemade cherry compote)
500 ml ready-made vanilla or chocolate custard
150 g good-quality dark chocolate, chopped
600 ml double cream
2 tbsp icing sugar
Kirsch or cherry juice (optional, to taste)
1 tsp vanilla extract
Fresh cherries and grated chocolate for garnish
Optional: Brownie bites or chocolate curls
1. Bake or buy chocolate cake. Cool completely and cut into 1-inch cubes.
2. Heat custard and stir in chopped chocolate until melted and smooth. Cool to room temperature.
3. Whip double cream, icing sugar, and vanilla extract to soft peaks.
4. Sprinkle cake cubes with Kirsch or cherry juice if using.
5. Layer half the cake into a trifle bowl. Add half the cherry filling, half the chocolate custard, and a layer of whipped cream.
6. Repeat layers. Add brownie bites or curls if desired.
7. Top with fresh cherries and grated chocolate.
8. Refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight before serving.
Store covered in the fridge and consume within 48 hours.
Do not freeze—cream and cherries will lose texture.
Use gluten-free cake and dairy-free cream for dietary needs.
